14 Netflix Original TV Shows Canceled Before Their Time
As the largest streaming service in the world, Netflix offers its viewers a massive library of original series that grows every year. These shows compete against each other to grab, and keep, viewers' attention, and while sometimes they are given months, or even years to build an audience and present complete storylines, other times Netflix will pull the plug on the show before the plot can reach a satisfactory conclusion. GLOW was cancelled at a point where all the characters were on the verge of a complete arc, while The OA left fans wondering what wild swing would come in a third season.
The reasons why a show gets canceled prematurely vary, but no matter the reason, fans of the show generally are angered and/or confused by the decision, while the show's creators are left to wonder about how the series would have played out if it had been allowed to end as they had planned. Charles Rowland and Edwin Payne are the titular duo, two ghosts who decide to stay on Earth to investigate crimes involving the supernatural, all the while trying to avoid being sent to the afterlife. They team up with Crystal, a psychic medium who originally is the only human who can see and communicate with them. The series, which was based on the DC Comics' characters created by Neil Gaiman, may have been canceled due to low ratings, though the decision could have also been influenced by the sexual abuse charges made against Gaiman.

In an alternate version of London where deadly ghosts who can only be seen by children are causing chaos, a troubled teenager named Lucy joins a ghost hunting agency run by two teenaged boys in order to fight the deadly supernatural creatures known as “The Problem”. Based on the first two in a series of YA books by Jonathan Stroud, Lockwood & Co.'s creators had planned to explore the other books in later seasons, but the show was canceled after just eight episodes because of low ratings.

Alina is a young cartographer who becomes a target of both a criminal gang and witch hunters once she discovers she is a Grisha (magic user) known as the Sun Summoner, the only person capable of defeating the evil creatures living in “The Fold” and reuniting her war-torn home nation of Ravka. Based on a series of YA novels by Leigh Bardugo set in the fantasy world of the Grishaverse, Shadow and Bone was canceled when Netflix decided to re-evaluate its content strategy in the wake of the 2023 writers' and actors' strike.

Dan Turner, a film archivist hired to examine and restore a 1994 documentary about a apartment building that burned down, finds himself being drawn into a mystery about a supernatural cult and the disappearance of Melody, the documentary's director. Based on a narrative podcast, Archive 81 answered some questions about the cult and Melody's fate before getting canceled, but left other questions unanswered, such as why Dan ends up in 1994 and Melody in the present.

A black comedy based on Charles Forsman's graphic novel of the same name, I Am Not Okay With This is centered around a queer teenager named Sydney who tries to control her new telekinetic powers even as she struggles to deal with her father's death and her relationships with her mother, brother, and friends. The series was designed to wrap after two seasons, but when Netflix abruptly canceled it due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it ended on a cliffhanger in which Sydney runs away after her powers kill her crush's boyfriend, leading her to meet a mysterious man in the woods. Netflix denied the show's creator permission to re-edit the final episode to give the story closure.

This black comedy/horror series centers around Joel and Sheila Hammond, a married pair of real estate agents whose life is turned upside down when Sheila becomes a zombie. When the series was canceled after the third season, it ended on a cliffhanger about Joel's fate after Sheila bites him to save him from being infected by a magical creature called Mr. Ball-Legs.
