There has arguably been no bigger revelation in the Splatter and gory horror subgenres than Terrifier. Starting off as a cult classic and quickly making a name for itself as one of the most daring and controversial horror films to release in decades, the amount of unadulterated terror, blood, gore, and visceral imagery is nothing short of astounding. Using practical effects to bring gore to life in ways movies have never done before, the film is a masterclass on making a deeply disturbing and utterly unnerving story. Of course, as anyone who has heard of the film knows, there is one kill so shocking, so vile, and so gory, it truly needs to be seen to be believed.

Coming hot off of the massive success story that was Saw, Eli Roth's Hostel delivered a darker, bloodier, and far more gore-tastic version of a very similar story. The entire premise of the film is simple, showcase some of the most gnarly and disturbing kills known to the horror genre and make sure buckets of blood, guts, and gore come along for the ride. Undoubtedly one of the goriest horror movies ever made, Hostel is a film that relishes in the nasty elements and executes them to perfection. While the film never gets as mean as many of the other films in the Splatter genre, it still manages to give fans of gore and disturbing imagery their money worth with some of the most interesting and amazing practical effects and deaths on screen in history.

When The Hills Have Eyes was released back in 1977, it was widely considered one of the most disturbing, vile, and masochistic films ever released. Then, nearly three decades later, a remake was released that somehow managed to up the ante in blood, guts, gore, and terror. While many horror films use blood and gore, in general, to generate excitement and showcase gnarly practical effects, The Hills Have Eyes used these elements for one purpose alone, to psychologically damage audiences as much as possible. The film is widely regarded as a nasty, mean-spirited adaptation of an already brutal film, and the downright shocking and vile amounts of masochism are nearly too much to stomach. 

When Saw came onto the scene in 2004, almost no one could have guessed that it would completely revolutionize the horror genre and introduce a craze of masochistic and gory films that would swarm the market. James Wan uses masterful directing techniques to create an intriguing, thrilling, and deeply disturbing film that crescendos into one of the most viscerally disturbing and gory scenes in movie history. While there are plenty of bloody and disgusting scenes in the film, as its title would suggest, the most painful and masochistic comes when the lead character is forced to saw off his own leg, an action the film relishes in forcing the audience to watch in painstakingly gory detail.

Wrong Turn does a masterful job of lulling audiences into a false state of security in terms of terror and gore, before ultimately ripping off the bandaid and showcasing some of the vilest and dirty deeds ever seen in cinema. A film that relishes in its ability to make its audience squirm, Wrong Turn uses piercing weaponry to shock and astound horror audiences before unleashing buckets of blood and gore onto unsuspecting victims. Disturbing and incredibly entertaining, Wrong Turn and its franchise as a whole are one of the most fun and entertaining gory horror films that do not get talked about nearly enough.

The second installment of the beloved Saw franchise saw the film up and anty one just about every conceivable metric. Showcasing a deeper story, more characters, and much more gore, Saw II stands as one of the better sequels of a classic horror film thanks to its ability to give the audience exactly what they wanted. The kills are much more inquisitive, the gore is much spicier, and the puzzles are far more fun than just sitting in an empty room for an hour and a half. While Saw II might not be as beloved as the films that preceded and succeeded it, the film still manages to be a fabricating splatter film with tons of gore.
