15 Fan Theories About 'Home Alone' That We Wish Were True
No image from the '90s is more iconic than that of Macaulay Culkin clutching his face while screaming. Home Alone has been a holiday staple for years and for good reason. It was simultaneously our worst fear and biggest dream as kids to live out a Home Alone type situation - create elaborate booby-traps, eat bowls full of ice cream in front of the TV for dinner, not have to deal with parents or siblings. But what about all the things left unsaid? All the characters and plot points we're still scratching our heads about? That's where fan theories come in. We managed to round up some of the best fan theories surrounding one of our all-time favorite movies.
Which Home Alone theory do you think could be true? Vote up your favorites below!

From Redditor u/SkiingHard:
TL;DR: Old Man Marley has a wound on his hand, when he meets with Kevin in the church revealing to be a sweet gentle man his wound only has a band aid, when he reunites with his son and his wife and kid his wound is healed, symbolising old wounds can heal.

Peter McCallister Is A Criminal
- Photo:
- Home Alone
- 20th Century Fox
From Redditor u/cubanesis:
Kevin's dad, Peter, has something fishy going on. My theory is that he's some kind of mid level criminal for the mob or something. First, the very first time we see Peter is when Harry is dressed as a cop scoping the place out. Peter is WAY defensive in this interaction. All Harry does is ask If he's the owner of the house and Peter jumps straight to "Am I in some Kind of trouble officer?". The look in his face is on edge the whole time he's talking to Harry. Secondly, we never find out what he does. They don't mention where he works, or his background, or anything. Now in the the book adaptation of the movie they say something about him being in "business." That's pretty vague. But Peter makes enough money to have a wife that doesn't work and like 5 kids. He also has a house that is worth like 1.5 million. This bring me to my next point. Harry calls the McCallister house "The Silver Tuna," the big score, etc. They specifically target this neighborhood for the McCallister house. When we see in the house there's nothing particularly valuable looking around. We don't ever see them mention jewels, or a safe or anything like that, but still this house that Harry has only seen the entryway to is THE HOUSE to rob.

Kevin Is Actually A Super Genius
- Photo:
- Home Alone
- 20th Century Fox
From Redditor u/RevanReborn365:
There are several times in the Home Alone movies that Kevin is shown to be incredibly intelligent (his traps, the overall plans he uses, and how he adapts). But I think that in reality he is more than intelligent, I contend that he is in fact nothing short of a super genius, so we see the world around him as if everyone is cro-magnon level idiots. The cops in the first movie said that they had been looking for the Bandits for a long time, and before meeting Kevin they are shown to be somewhat competent thieves, then Kevin wipes the floor with them. The family has instances of this too (except Buzz he really is an idiot). Now there are times when Kevin seems to mess up, but those are completely unexpected and unpredictable circumstances (the patch of ice in the second movie) he couldn't have figured that would be there, however he still got out of it by doing thing a normal 9/10 year old wouldn't think to do (pinching that woman's butt and blaming the guy she didn't punch first). So in reality, it is Kevin that preceives the world as idiots because of his intelligence, so we see them that way as well.

Mr. Duncan And The Pigeon Lady Used To Be In Love
- Photo:
- Home Alone 2: Lost In New York
- 20th Century Fox
From Redditor u/GoesOff_On_Tangent:
TL;DR: Pigeon Lady and Mr. Duncan were a thing, they couldn't have kids, that heartbreak caused them to end their relationship, sparking Mr. Duncan's love for children and starting a toy store, and Pigeon Lady from ever falling in love again, because she thought any man who learned about her infertility would never truly love her.

Old Man Marley Is Actually Kevin From The Future
- Photo:
- Home Alone
- 20th Century Fox
From Redditor u/spookycookies:
TL;DR: Kevin's neighbor aka the "Shovel Slayer" old man Marley is in actuality Kevin McAllister from the future and his purpose in 1990 is to alter his own tragic childhood. Or, Marley is Kevin from the darkest timeline, come back to gently guide Kevin to success. His hand isn't healing, it's getting less damaged by Kevin making better decisions, possibly even saving his son's life.
Many of the events in Home Alone are part of a divergent timeline, and due to the decision to omit any scenes that directly tie any kind of sci fi elements, we as the viewers miss out on witnessing the events taking place in timeline A's 1990 Christmas. While the film DOES begin in timeline A, Marley's actions drastically alter the outcome of Kevin's holiday and spin off into a new timeline that we will call timeline B.

Kate McCallister Is Going To Hell
- Photo:
- Home Alone
- 20th Century Fox
From Redditor u/Celtic_Weirdo:
In Home Alone, when Kate McCallister was in Scranton, PA she told the airline attendant that she would sell her soul to the Devil himself in order to get to her son. Not even a second later, Gus Polinski showed up to convince her to take a ride with him and his Polka crew. Gus, in this case, is the Devil himself and because he brought her back to her son, she now owes the Devil her soul and will now spend all of eternity in Hell.
