Anyone who seeks out emotional films that tug at the heartstrings and elicit a flood of tears will agree that 2024 was a great year for cinema. From animated masterpieces like The Wild Robot and Ultraman: Rising to highly acclaimed romantic dramas like We Live in Time, this year's movies repeatedly brought us to tears with their heartfelt characters, tragic storylines, and devastating plot twists. Plot: When a kind and task-oriented robot named Roz (Lupita Nyong'o) washes up on a forest island uninhabited by humans, she adopts an orphaned Canadian goose named Brightbill (Kit Connor). Along with the forest's other inhabitants, Roz learns to raise Brightbill and fights to protect the island from a destructive retrieval robot.
The Most Heartbreaking Moment: Roz decides to leave the island to protect the animals, knowing that other retrieval robots will come for her and put their lives in danger. Despite their protests, Roz gathers her family around her to say goodbye and promises that she will never forget them.
Super sad?Plot: As Riley adapts to the messy, complex world of being a teenager, her core emotions are forced to welcome Embarrassment, Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Nostalgia to headquarters. The new emotions test Riley's friendships and wreak havoc on her Sense of Self while she attends a summer hockey camp.
The Most Heartbreaking Moment: Anxiety overrides Riley's mind with endless thoughts of worst-case scenarios in an attempt to prepare her for the future. Overwhelmed and feeling panicked, Riley experiences her first anxiety attack, and Joy has to help calm her down.
Super sad?Plot: On the eve of her 18th birthday, Elliott (Maisy Stella) meets her older self while tripping on hallucinogenic mushroom tea. Throughout the summer, young Elliott takes life advice from old Elliott (Aubrey Plaza) before she goes off to college.
The Most Heartbreaking Moment: Despite old Elliott's mysterious warnings to stay away from a boy named Chad, young Elliott finds herself falling in love with him anyway. Old Elliott later reveals that Chad will die tragically and there isn't anything young Elliott can do to stop it. Old Elliott eventually accepts that Chad's love is worth the pain she has had to endure and gives young Elliott her blessing before giving Chad a last hug goodbye.
Super sad?Plot: Three estranged daughters Christina (Elizabeth Olson), Katie (Carrie Coon), and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) return to New York City to say goodbye to their ailing father Vincent (Jay O. Sanders).
The Most Heartbreaking Moment: After being escorted by his daughters to his favorite chair, Vincent gets a burst of energy. He miraculously begins walking around without the help of medical equipment, and his joyful children listen as he delivers an emotional speech about life, death, and his love for each of them. It is only after Vincent is done speaking that he realizes he died in his favorite chair moments after sitting down.
Super sad?Plot: When newly divorced Tobias (Andrew Garfield) meets a talented chef named Almut (Florence Pugh), the two fall deeply in love. As the pair navigate the normal ups and downs of a committed relationship, the couple is devastated to learn Almut's ovarian cancer has returned.
The Most Heartbreaking Moment: Almut, Tobias, and their daughter Ella visit an ice skating rink after Almut competes in her final cooking competition. Although she skates beautifully and effortlessly, Almut eventually spins away from her family. Weakened and tired, she looks across the rink at Tobias, lifts her hand, and waves goodbye.

Plot: An estranged father and recovering addict (Ewan McGregor) drives his daughter (Clara McGregor) across the country to enter her into rehab. The pair attempt to repair their damaged relationship while encountering a cast of colorful characters.
The Most Heartbreaking Moment: The father makes a distraught phone call when he realizes his daughter didn't know he was taking her to rehab. Panicked and teary-eyed, he tells the person on the line that he was a terrible father, and that even though he's not the person he was, his daughter still sees him as the untrustworthy addict from her childhood.
