  • Marmalade

The Set-Up: Marmalade opens in prison, where Baron (Joe Keery) shares a cell with his cellmate, Otis (Aldis Hodge). Otis agrees to help Baron escape for $250,000. This leads to Baron explaining how he came upon the money: a woman named Marmalade (Camila Morrone), had helped Baron get the money he needed to care for his mother. As the story unfolds, Otis reveals his own mother is sick in Jamaica, and the two bond before Otis sets up an escape.

The Twist: There’s a minor twist surrounding Otis, as he’s actually an FBI agent who’s been targeting Marmalade for a long time. He uses Baron to try and find her, but then the film’s true twist emerges after Baron successfully escapes. Marmalade never existed, and it was Baron all along. Marmalade was just a part of his complex story of deception, as he masterminded everything and used Marmalade to throw off the investigation. Ultimately, he leaves a letter for Otis with a first-class ticket to Kingston, Jamaica, as Baron cares for his mother in a nursing home.

  • IF

The Set-Up: IF tells the story of Bea (Cailey Fleming), a young girl who lost her mother and whose father is in the hospital awaiting heart surgery. Bea discovers strange, unfamiliar creatures and follows them to meet a man named Cal (Ryan Reynolds), who tells her about IFs (Imaginary Friends). His job is to find new children for IFs whose kids have grown up and no longer believe in them. Bea has a different idea of reuniting IFs with their former children, who are now all grown adults. Early success in this venture leads Bea to work with Cal, and after her father’s situation worsens, she goes to the hospital. Instead of saying goodbye, she tells him a story, leading to a lovely hug.

The Twist: After visiting with her father, Bea runs to thank Cal for his help, but when she opens the door to his apartment, it’s a storage room. Though initially confused, the truth is revealed after Bea’s dad is released from the hospital. Cal is actually Bea’s IF; she forgot about him after her mother died. After realizing this, she returns to Cal’s room and thanks him for helping her, saying she will always need him. With this, she can see Cal and the IFs again.

  • The First Omen

The Set-Up: The First Omen is a prequel to 1976’s The Omen and serves to explain the origin of the Antichrist. In The Omen, it’s revealed that Damien is the son of a jackal who was swapped with another newborn to place him into an influential family. The First Omen reveals the details of the conspiracy to make all of that happen, and it plays out for an American nun, Margaret (Nell Tiger Free), who is sent to work at a Catholic orphanage in Rome, where she uncovers the plot as she’s fully embroiled in the conspiracy against her will.

The Twist: Margaret isn’t sent to Rome without reason, and it turns out that she’s not a regular person. Instead, she’s the daughter of the demonic jackal and was forcibly brought into the world as a means of eventually giving birth to the Antichrist. Indeed, the conspiracy revolves around this fact, as it’s believed the only way that the Antichrist can be brought into the world is if the Devil mates with his own offspring, namely, Margaret. On top of that twist, it’s revealed that Margaret gave birth to twins - meaning Damian has a sibling.

The Set-Up: My Old Ass tells the story of Elliott (Maisy Stella), a young woman who is on the cusp of leaving home for college. During a camping trip, Elliott and her two friends eat psychedelic mushrooms, after which Elliott meets her older self (Aubrey Plaza), who tells her to avoid a boy named Chad (Percy Hynes White). This creates some serious issues after Elliott meets and begins to have feelings for Chad despite previously identifying as a lesbian. Despite the warning, Elliott’s attraction grows for Chad, and her older self, dubbed “My Old Ass” in her phone contacts, refuses to explain why she must avoid him.

The Twist: Despite the warnings from My Old Ass, Elliott ultimately tells Chad how she feels about him, and he reveals that he already attends the college she’s going to in the fall. They sleep together, leading to one more meeting between My Old Ass and Elliott. My Old Ass finally reveals the truth: she utterly loved Chad, but he dies sometime in the future, and there’s nothing she or Elliott could do to prevent his passing. This revelation doesn’t sway Elliott’s interest in Chad, and the film ends with her focusing on her future.

The Set-Up: In the '90s, FBI Agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) is assigned to find an occultist serial killer believed to have slaughtered families throughout Oregon. The murders all center around a father killing his family and then himself, leaving a note filled with Satanic messaging with the signature, “Longlegs.” Her investigation bears fruit, but through it, she learns some disturbing clues about her own life, leading her to go home and speak with her mother, Ruth (Alicia Witt).

The Twist: The twist reveals that Longlegs (Nicolas Cage) has been working with Ruth for decades after forming a deal with her to spare Lee’s life. In return, Ruth keeps Longlegs in her basement and takes the demonic dolls he creates to people’s houses disguised as a nun. This leads the fathers of those homes to commit familicide before taking their own lives. Lee’s memories of Longlegs had been purged, and his magical abilities influenced her mind.

  • A Quiet Place: Day One
    • Photo:
      • Paramount Pictures

The Set-Up: A Quiet Place: Day One tells the story of how aliens invaded the world and tore civilization to pieces. We’ve already seen what that becomes in the first and second movies in the franchise, but the prequel reveals the truth of the alien's origins. The film follows a terminally ill woman, Sam (Lupita Nyong'o), as she survives the earliest days of the invasion. It all starts in Manhattan, so the Army destroys the bridges, hoping to contain the aliens. The remaining survivors and Sam attempt to escape to the shore, as the aliens cannot swim. The film ends with some survivors making it out of the city alive.

The Twist: The twist is actually why and how the aliens came to planet Earth in the first place. It’s revealed that the government’s experiments with sound-based technology worked like a beacon, drawing the aliens to Earth. This adds a layer of guilt to the franchise, as it’s clear the invasion wouldn’t have happened had humanity not inadvertently called down its own destruction from the stars.
